20090731__yalehome_08012_galleryNeighbors lost the battle, but maybe not the war…. Early on July 31st, the city issued the demolition permit which it was legally required to do, and demolition began that same day on the home of Tom Hulbert’s 1547 Yale Ave. Neighbors stood and watched as the 80 year old architecturally significant home was turned to rubble; their 9 month plus fight to save it was over.

The battle now becomes the property rights of the individual vs. the architectural 20090731__yalehome_08013_gallerypreservation of the neighborhood. Which side will the city support? Should individuals have the ultimate decision on what to do with their property and when? Do zoning laws do any good? What should happen in the future?

If you have an opinion on this, make sure you participate in this Wednesdays Community Council meeting, August 5th 2009. Also, Salt Lake City would like you to take a survey on this topic here.
